| Everyone helps to create waste every day. Waste
is made at school and at home, but also at other places where
people work, live or travel. Some examples are waste from factories,
offices or shops.
Each year in Ireland we produce about 3 million tonnes of
household waste or waste from your home. However, we have
not always thrown away as much as we do at present. In the
past, when there was less money and fewer things to buy, people
used to repair things that got broken and reused whatever
they could over and over again.
Vermi-composting
Vermi-composting is the process, relatively new to Ireland,
whereby worms are used to degrade organic matter and produce
an exceptionally useful product - vermicast - that is used as
a soil conditioner and fertiliser. greenstar headquarters compost
canteen waste in this manner and we also jointly sponsor vermi-composting
schools projects.
