Ireland's first national green awards launched

Minister for the Environment John Gormley TD today launched Ireland's first national green awards to celebrate the achievements of Irish businesses and organisations who are making substantial efforts to tackle the challenge of climate change.

Speaking at the launch the Minister said: "These national awards will recognise and reward the achievements of citizens, communities and businesses who are striving in their daily lives to reduce their impact on the environment."

"I hope they will inspire, energise and lead people to think about how they can change their behaviour to reduce the impact of climate change" he added.

The Green Awards are sponsored by the Irish Independent and Greenstar, Ireland's leading provider of Environmental, Waste Management and Recycling Services. As part of the awards programme there will be a gala awards night on November 5th 2008 at City West Dublin where Ireland's green leaders will be honoured.

Michael Sanfey, Head of Sales & Marketing with Greenstar said: "Green thinking is on the agenda like never before with businesses throughout the country making great strides in adopting sustainable environmental practices. Greenstar is delighted to support Ireland's first Green Business Awards and help recognise those companies who have 'set the standard' in terms of environmental leadership."

"Companies who adopt environmentally sustainable practices into their business strategies not only improve their bottom line but their efforts are vital for Ireland's green economy and its positive contribution towards global sustainability." he added.
