Greenstar Statement re EPA Court Case
4th May, 2006
Greenstar welcomes the decision of Cork District Court today (Thursday, 4 May 2006) to apply the probation act in dismissing the charge against the Company of causing an environmental “nuisance” in the case taken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) against its Sarsfield Court recycling facility in Cork.
Greenstar also expressed disappointment at the decision by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to proceed with the prosecution in relation to odour at its materials recycling facility at Sarsfield Court Industrial Estate, Cork.
The EPA was fully aware of the extensive efforts taken by Greenstar to address complaints received with respect to odour at the facility. These included the engagement of international consultants to recommend comprehensive odour abatement measures which have been implemented, at a cost of €800,000. The measures were completed in April 2006.
Greenstar's state-of-the-art materials recycling facility in Sarsfieldcourt was developed in 2003 with full EPA approval and in strict accordance with EPA guidelines and licence requirements. Subsequently, Greenstar has committed to meeting the amended licence requirements and has been in active engagement with the EPA with respect to this.
The Sarsfieldcourt facility, which is licensed to handle 95,000 tonnes of non-hazardous household, commercial and industrial waste, is certified to the ISO-14001 environmental management standard. As with all of Greenstar's waste management facilities, best available technology has been employed to ensure it operates to the highest standards of international best practice.
