Greenstar - Waste Management Company Grows with Energy
- Ireland’s first non-subsidised landfill gas-to-energy project launched
- Greenstar plans to invest €12 million in implementing bio-energy strategy
- Revenues from gas-to-energy plant to reach €1.7m in 2006
Greenstar, Ireland’s leading integrated waste management company, announced today (Wednesday 28th September) that it will invest €12 million over the next five years in the roll out of the first phase of its ambitious bio-energy strategy which will see the company produce electricity from landfill gas. Greenstar will sell the energy to Airtricity, the green energy provider who will distribute it through the national grid. Both Greenstar and Airtricity are subsidiary companies of NTR plc.
The announcement was made as the company opened its first gas-to-energy plant at its landfill, KTK, in Brownstown, Co. Kildare, which will produce enough green energy to meet the requirements of a town of the size of Naas for one year. The 3.75MW state-of-the-art plant involved an investment of over €3 million.
Despite being Ireland’s first non subsidised landfill gas-to-energy project, it will contribute to Greenstar earnings from year one, with revenues from the KTK plant expected to reach €1.7m in 2006.
Greenstar plans to commission six landfill gas-to-energy plants over the next five years which will convert landfill gas, generated as part of the engineered landfill process, and use it as an energy source. Landfill gas is the natural by-product of the decomposition of solid waste in landfills and is comprised primarily of carbon dioxide and methane. The total amount of electricity generated from all six plants is expected to reach 15 MW, enough to meet the requirements of 10,000 homes for one year.
