‘Greenstar is committed to the highest possible environmental and operational standards. The company has a duty both legally and morally to ensure that its operations are carried out with the minimum of negative environmental impacts. This is a duty Greenstar is determined to meet’.
As indicated by the above environmental policy statement, Greenstar regards environmental protection as an integral part of its business and endeavours to conduct all of its activities in a manner that protects the environment. For this reason, Greenstar has a documented Environmental Management System (EMS) in place in each of its waste management facilities. As part of the implementation of the EMS, Greenstar has prepared a corporate environmental policy.
Evidence of Greenstar commitment to achieving environmental excellence is provided by ISO 14001:2004 certification awarded to several Greenstar facilities, including our Materials Recovery Facility in Glanmire, Co. Cork, and also the Greenogue recycling facility in Rathcoole.
Further evidence of our commitment is provided by the operation of KTK Landfill in County Kildare. This site is operated in line with a comprehensive Environmental Management System which ensures compliance with strict standards. As evidence of these standards, KTK Landfill was awarded 'The CIWM's Green Apple Award' which is awarded for Environmental Best Practice within the industry, and achieved ISO14001:2004 accreditation in December 2005.
Greenstars Landfill at Knockharely in Co. Meath also achieved ISO14001:2004 accreditation in 2005, and further sites will be certified in 2006.Greenstar's environmental experience is further enhanced by the number of waste licences held. Greenstar currently holds 15 EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) waste licences, which cover our waste transfer facilities, materials recovery facilities, and three operational landfill sites. Greenstar has also applied for licences in relation to a number of other sites across the country.
In the case of each licensed operation, both facility management staff (on site) and staff from Greenstar's Environmental Section (based at head office), correspond regularly with the EPA and other regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with requirements of the waste licence.
