Greenstar's Ballynagran Landfill in Co. Wicklow is delighted to be able to fund and support the Ballynagran Energy Plus Community Project which was officially launched on 6th October 2010. The project was successful in its application for funding from Ballynagran Landfills Community Fund. The project will receive approximately €155,000 from the fund during its first year.
Overall Mission of the Project
The overall mission of the project is to dramatically reduce the energy use of the rural community around Ballynagran, create sustainable green-collar employment and improve the quality of life for local residents. The long term objective is to produce locally a surplus of energy from renewable resources in excess of what is needed in order to create an energy-independent community.
Community Benefits
The following benefits will be delivered during the first year alone of the project:
- Free energy audit, radon test and low energy light bulbs for all 600 homes in those townlands which are within 3km of the landfill at the Beehive;
- Distribution of low energy light bulbs;
- Database of energy use in homes;
- Radical energy update of the primary school at Glenealy;
- Hiring and training of two unemployed persons from the Study Area to work in a professional office setting directly on the project;
- Fully funded training courses for locals in eco-construction;
- Monthly community seminars on topical green issues;
- Feasibility study for a proposed community wind farm; and
- Enhanced community spirit and sense of pride arising from participating in the project.
